The Chamber of commerce at a general meeting
on the 18th of Feb. threw over their Committee
and by a majority of 40 to 36 25 on a show of hands,
and of 40 to 34 as shown by voting cards, voted for
an enquiry by the Straits Currency Committee into
the question of the reform of the Currency arrange-
ments of Hong Kong. er 30 members of the Chanber
left without recording their votes, and 23 were
absent.
The Committee of the Chamber after considering
the question had decided to adhere to the opinion

expressed by the Chamber in Sept. 1897 that it
ме
was
wholly impracticable for the Colony to attempt a
currency divorce from China, and that the Committee
of the Chamber could not see their way to taking
any action for recommending a change in the exis-
ting currency.
The Committee's views were thrown over at the
General meeting, but as the Gov. points out the

A selves, and their opponents had no opportunity of
making an effective reply. The Gov. nas accordingly
collected the opinions of the calef mercantile men,
and they disclose an almost unanimous feeling against
any interference with the present Currency so long
as the Chinese currency remains what it is.
